SCUBA DIVING in the Florida Keys

Offers the best diving in Florida.

Included in the northern or upper Keys are: North Key Largo, Key Largo, Plantation Key, Rodriguez Key, Windley Key, and then down to Tavernier and Islamorada.

Upper Florida keys scuba diving provides everything from ledges and walls and extensive coral reefs, including the renowned Molasses Reef which covers a huge area and is home to over 500 species of fish. Don’t forget to dive Pickles Reef, the Conch Reef System, Davis, Crocker, Victory, and many others.

Diving depths range from 18-120 feet and the weather allows for year round dives, although winter swells and currents may find some trips cancelled. Always check with your charter the day of the dive.

When scuba diving in Key Largo, it’s possible to get to all of the major wrecks in the area, including the U.S. Coast Guard Cutters Duane and Bibb, as well as the much loved Spiegel Grove, and the Eagle. Currents can be swift and some of these dives may be for Advanced open-water divers only due to depth ceilings.

No Key Largo scuba diving trip would be complete without a visit to the John Pennekamp National Marine Sanctuary where you can enjoy some education in addition to some great Key Largo scuba diving!

Most of the scuba diving charters in the Keys are reputable and will offer a somewhat similar service. However, there are important differences. Some boats are very large, offering more space and some shade (but can be “cattle class” on busy days), while “six-packs” while smaller, may offer more flexibility in terms of custom destinations and provide for a more personal dive experience.

In short, the upper Florida keys area offers something for every diver, from beginner to advanced. For those looking to dive in Key West, the drive to from Key Largo to Key West could take you a couple of hours, depending on traffic. If you’re short on time, scuba diving Key Largo could be your best option.

Check out the Scuba Schedules calendar to find all the best keys scuba diving. Remember to get to the dock/shop early – and tell them that Scuba Schedules sent you. We hope you enjoy your scuba diving trip to the Florida Keys. Dive safely!~
